Redis caching for the kanban endpoints

Implement GitHub issue #9: add Redis caching to the kanban read paths in internal/pkg/server/routes/kanban.go, with cache invalidation on the matching write paths, following the shared Redis client's existing usage pattern elsewhere in the codebase. No test framework required — this repo has none — but the build must be verified.

full task prompt
Implement GitHub issue #9 on this repo: "add redis caching in auth proxy for kanban endpoints."

There is already a shared Redis client at `internal/pkg/redis/main.go`, and it is
already used elsewhere in the codebase (see `internal/app/server.go` and
`internal/pkg/server/permissions/perm.go` for the existing usage pattern). Follow
that same pattern rather than inventing a new one.

Scope:
- Add caching for the read paths in `internal/pkg/server/routes/kanban.go`.
- Add cache invalidation on the corresponding write paths, so a write never
leaves a stale cached read behind.
- Pick sane key naming and TTLs consistent with how the existing Redis usage in
  this repo does it.
- This repo currently has no test files. Do not feel obligated to introduce a
whole test framework for this change, but do double check the code compiles
and, if there's an easy way to sanity-check the caching behavior manually
(e.g. a local run), do that.

When you are done, close with a single clear paragraph summarizing exactly what
you changed and why — that summary becomes the pull request's title and body
verbatim, so make it read like a real PR description, not an internal note.

Overall assessment

needs changes
The coder produced a clean, convention-following change quickly. The one real defect was a data-shape question that three agents raised and none resolved: does proto.Item embed comments? It does, so the new getItem cache goes stale on every comment write. The verification stage was the weak point of the run. The tester treated repeated builds and a /tmp document as testing and silently added go.mod churn. The reviewer burned its turns on blocked hover calls instead of one search. Adding item:<id> invalidation to the comment handlers and reverting go.mod/go.sum would make this merge-ready.

✓Strengths

  • The kanban.go diff is minimal and follows the existing GetLabels/getItems read-through pattern, helpers and 24h TTL exactly, as the task asked.
  • updateItem/DeleteItem invalidation uses the right form field; the coder verified this against kanban.UpdateItem's vals.Get("id").
  • The coder was efficient and clean: read-before-edit throughout, a cheap search to find UpdateItem, and go build, go vet and get_diagnostics before handoff.
  • The ask agent's brief was accurate and anticipated both the per-item invalidation gap and the comment-invalidation question.

!Concerns

  • getItem caches an Item that embeds Comments, but comment writes never invalidate item:<id>. Users won't see new, edited or deleted comments for up to 24h, which is a regression from the uncached behaviour.
  • go.mod/go.sum churn from the tester's `go mod tidy` shipped in the PR, and the tester's report said only kanban.go changed.
  • Nothing checked the caching behaviour itself. 'Tests pass' amounts to repeated go build runs plus a markdown file in /tmp.
  • The reviewer's inefficient LSP thrashing (5 blocked calls) left the one real bug unverified, and the orchestrator settled anyway.

needs changes

The kanban.go change is small and follows the repo's existing read-through pattern from GetLabels/getItems: the same helpers, the same X-cache: HIT header and the same flat 24h TTL. The item:<id> invalidation in updateItem/DeleteItem is wired to the right form field. The problem is that the new getItem cache stores a full proto.Item, and that struct embeds `Comments []*Comment` (internal/pkg/RPC/kanban/proto/kanban.pb.go:414). None of AddComment, UpdateComment or DeleteComment invalidates item:<id>. So on a normal path (open an item, add a comment, open the item again) the user gets a cached copy without their comment for up to 24 hours. Before this PR getItem was uncached and always fresh, so this is a regression, and it breaks the task's explicit rule that a write must never leave a stale cached read behind. The PR also carries unrelated go.mod/go.sum churn from a `go mod tidy` the tester ran. The body's claim that the other read paths 'already had caching or were out of scope' is inaccurate for exportKanban and getKanban.

highcorrectnessinternal/pkg/server/routes/kanban.go:173

getItem now caches the whole proto.Item, including its embedded Comments list, but none of the comment write handlers (AddComment/UpdateComment/DeleteComment) invalidates item:<id>, so comment changes are invisible for up to 24h.

detail

A user opens a card (GET /kanban/item?id=X), which populates item:X. They post a comment (POST /kanban/comment?item_id=X), then reopen the card and get the X-cache: HIT copy without the new comment. Editing or deleting a comment behaves the same way. The result stays stale until the 24h TTL expires or someone PATCHes/DELETEs the item itself. Before this PR, GET /kanban/item always hit the RPC, so this breaks the task's 'a write never leaves a stale cached read behind' requirement.

suggested fix — In AddComment, call `redis.DeleteFromRedis("item:" + itemId)` after `kanban.AddComment`. The returned proto.Comment may also carry its item id, in which case use that. UpdateComment/DeleteComment only have comment_id, so either take `item_id` as an extra query param (the client already has it) or read the parent id from the RPC response and delete item:<id>. If neither is feasible, leave getItem uncached and cache only GetLabel. Also consider whether the board-level `<boardId>:items:*` lists embed comments and need the same invalidation.

lowstylego.mod:6

Unrelated dependency churn: go.mod drops rejonson, resend-go/v2, go-redis v6 and ginkgo, and go.sum loses about 100 lines. All of it comes from a `go mod tidy` the tester ran, not from the caching change.

detail

The build still passes, so tidy only removed unused modules and nothing breaks at runtime. But a caching PR now also carries a module-graph edit that a reviewer has to verify separately. It will also conflict with any in-flight branch that starts using resend-go or rejonson again. The PR body's 'reuses the shared Redis client already vendored' line obscures where this churn came from.

suggested fix — Revert go.mod/go.sum to main in this PR. If tidying is wanted, send it as its own commit or PR.

lowcorrectness

Two read paths in kanban.go are left uncached: exportKanban (GET /kanban/export) and getKanban (GET /kanban). The PR body says the remaining reads 'already had caching or were out of scope', which is not accurate.

detail

The task asked for caching on 'the read paths' in kanban.go. The heaviest read, a full board export, still hits the RPC every time. A maintainer reading the PR body would wrongly assume every read is covered. Not blocking, since export is an occasional operation.

suggested fix — Either cache exportKanban under `<boardId>:export`, which the existing `DeleteAllKeysPrefix(boardId)` on item writes would then invalidate for free, or reword the PR body to say explicitly that export and getKanban were intentionally left uncached.

acceptable

The ask → coder → tester/reviewer pipeline was well-structured. The ask agent delivered a thorough, accurate brief with cheap tools (read_file, targeted search). The coder was efficient: it read kanban.go, used one search plus one read window to confirm UpdateItem uses vals.Get("id"), made four str_replace edits after reading the file, and ran go build, go vet and get_diagnostics. It had zero read-before-edit violations. The verification stage was where the run went wrong. The tester ran `go mod tidy` twice in the shared worktree, which modified go.mod/go.sum. Its git status check came before tidy and it never re-checked, then reported 'only kanban.go modified / no new dependencies', so the churn shipped in the PR. It rebuilt the same code about five times and re-read kanban.go in about a dozen windows. Instead of the manual sanity check the task suggested, it wrote a markdown 'test plan' to /tmp and reported 'All tests pass' in a repo with no tests. The reviewer correctly suspected that proto.Item embeds comments. It tried to confirm this with blind hover/find_references calls at guessed coordinates: five were blocked by call_verify, and loop_control flagged repeating_itself at 0.88 and 0.91. A single search for `type Item struct` would have answered it. It approved with the real bug unverified, and the orchestrator settled without a one-call follow-up. Total spend ($0.79, 64 tool calls, 76 turns, ~6.5 min wall) is somewhat heavy for a ~20-line change. Most of the excess sits in the tester and reviewer.

highscope-creep· tester (aac2dfb4)

The tester ran `go mod tidy` in the shared coder worktree. The tidy rewrote go.mod/go.sum, and those unrelated changes were committed into the PR.

detail

Line 118: `go mod tidy && echo "Tidy check passed"` (stderr shows module downloads). It ran again at line 142 under '=== Module Tidy Check ==='. The tester's `git status` at line 106 came before tidy and showed only kanban.go modified; it never re-ran git status. Its final report says 'No new dependencies' and lists only kanban.go under paths, yet PR #20 shows go.mod/go.sum with -117 lines.

mediumjudge-flag· reviewer (e6b48972)

The reviewer thrashed on LSP hover/find_references with guessed coordinates. call_verify blocked five of those attempts, loop_control flagged repeated behaviour twice, and the reviewer kept retrying variants.

detail

call_verify at lines 94 (hover 267:21), 107 (hover 179:13), 114 (find_references 179:18), 119 (hover 267:14) and 131 (hover 180:10) have no matching tool execution and account for stats.json's 5 call_verify 'block' outcomes. Line 119 scores repeats_prior_call 0.76 and line 131 scores 0.78. loop_control at line 120 scores repeating_itself 0.88 / making_progress 0.11, and line 132 scores repeating_itself 0.91 / making_progress 0.10. The one successful hover at line 90 returned only 'package kanban'.

mediumwasted-search· reviewer (e6b48972)

To learn whether proto.Item embeds comments, the reviewer reached for hover instead of a cheap search or find_symbol for `type Item struct`. It never got the answer and approved with the real bug unverified.

detail

Line 79: hover at kanban.go:179:17 returned just `func kanban.GetItem(task_id string) proto.Item`, not the struct fields. The reviewer's report says: 'Not independently verified: whether kanban.GetItem's returned proto.Item embeds a nested comments list ... I could not confirm the proto shape before running out of review turns.' kanban.pb.go:414 has `Comments []*Comment`, which one search would have surfaced.

mediummissed-tests· tester (aac2dfb4)

The tester never tried to sanity-check the caching behaviour (no attempt to find a local Redis or a quick harness). It wrote a markdown 'test plan' to /tmp instead, then reported 'PASS - All tests pass' in a repo with no tests.

detail

Line 137: `cat > /tmp/cache_test_plan.md << 'EOF' # Redis Caching Implementation ... Test Verification` with reasoning 'I'll write a logical analysis document showing test coverage'. No run_command checks for redis-server or runs the service. The final verdict says 'PASS - All tests pass', while the leftover section admits 'Caching behavior cannot be sanity-checked without running the service'. Build verification itself did run with ok:true (lines 41, 74).

mediumreasoning-gap· orchestrator

The orchestrator settled and opened the PR even though the reviewer had flagged an unverified stale-cache risk. Checking the Item proto would have taken one search, and the flag turned out to be a real bug.

detail

transcript.md, orchestrator message at 23:59:26: 'comment write handlers ... may leave a stale item:<id> cache if item objects embed comments — flagged as a possible follow-up, not blocking.' The task's hard requirement is 'so a write never leaves a stale cached read behind'. The engine instructions allowed spawning a coder with continue_from on request-changes, but no check was made.

lowredundant-tool-call· tester (aac2dfb4)

The tester rebuilt the unchanged tree about five times and ran go vet twice, all after the coder had already reported a clean go build and go vet.

detail

go build appears at lines 74, 122 (`go build -v`), 134 (`go build ./... && echo "✓ Build successful"`), 142 and 152. go vet appears at lines 77 and 152. The coder had already run go build at line 41 (exit 0) and go vet at line 47. No file changed between these runs except go.mod/go.sum via tidy.

lowredundant-tool-call· tester (aac2dfb4)

After reading all of kanban.go at lines 56 and 58, the tester re-read it in nine more small windows and later grepped/sed'ed the same lines again.

detail

Full read at 56 (1-200) and 58 (200-304). The tester then read windows at 81 (89+20), 84 (165+20), 86 (185+20), 88 (204+20), 93 (68+20), 97 (130+35), 99 (109+20), 104 (41+26) and 130 (1+15). It also re-extracted the same lines via grep/sed in run_command at 145 and 148, and ran `git diff` at 110.

lowreasoning-gap· tester (aac2dfb4)

The tester ran a command against a hallucinated path (/workspace) and recovered on the next call.

detail

Line 68: `cd /workspace && go build ./...` returned exit 1 with '/bin/sh: line 0: cd: /workspace: No such file or directory'. Line 71 then ran `pwd && ls -la` to rediscover the worktree root.

lowreasoning-gap· tester (aac2dfb4)

The tester's report makes a false claim about invalidation coverage: it says the board-wide prefix wipe also clears item:* keys.

detail

transcript.md, tester report test_plan item (5): 'createItem board-wide invalidation clears all board-prefixed keys including any "item:*" keys'. DeleteAllKeysPrefix scans `<boardId>*`, and `item:<id>` does not start with the board id. The ask agent had already pointed this out in its leftover notes.

lowreasoning-gap· ask (c1d0d2da)

The ask agent raised the comment→item invalidation gap but never checked whether Item actually embeds comments, so the question passed unresolved to every later agent.

detail

Line 21 searched the RPC wrapper signatures and saw `func GetItem(task_id string) kanbanProto.Item`, but the agent never looked at the proto struct. Its leftover notes say: 'Confirm whether comments need cache invalidation at all before treating this as a required fix.'
